The Mercury Controversy

More than likely, you are aware of the controversy surrounding mercury amalgam fillings. Some theories claim that the mercury used to restore your teeth can lead to allergic reactions or more serious health problems. In some countries, dentists are not allowed to use amalgam filling at all.

Mercury FillingMercury is classified as a neurotoxin, which is a substance that can damage the tissues in the nervous system. Amalgam fillings are made up of 50 percent mercury, with the rest being made up of silver, zinc and copper. It is true that mercury vapors are released from the fillings during chewing, but whether these vapors are harmful or not is unsure. There is no definite proof that mercury in the fillings actually cause health problems, but there is proof that there is a connection between the amount of amalgam fillings in the mouth and the levels of mercury in the body’s tissues.

While we cannot prove whether mercury amalgam fillings will affect your health, we can tell you that ceramic fillings provide a safer alternative because they do not release vapors of any kind. Not only do they not leak, they are more durable and more aesthetically appealing.
