TMJ/TMD

If you suffer from symptoms such as headaches, earaches or jaw muscle tenderness, you may suffer from TMD, tempormandibular joint disorders. These cycles of pain and spasms may be occurring because the muscles and joints are not functioning properly or by having a damaged joint as a result of an injury or disease. Early detection and treatment of TMD is important to help prevent more serious conditions in the future. It is important to also remember that no one treatment can completely resolve TMJ disorders entirely and treatment takes time to be most effective.

Some common TMD symptoms include:

  • Clenching or grinding of the teeth
  • Headaches
  • Jaw pain or discomfort
  • Clicking in your jaw
  • Difficulty closing the jaw

The type of treatment used is determined by the underlying cause of the problem. A misaligned jaw can be corrected by using different devices applied by an orthodontist or a head and neck specialist. Sometimes, anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDS) can be used to help reduce inflammation of in the jaw. The use of moist heat packs can help relieve muscle spasms or muscle tension. Other treatment possibilities include, a soft food diet or relaxation exercises. Very rarely will surgery be needed to correct the jaw.
